Plant Releases
Cultivar and germplasm development remain an important part of our mission and the pipeline in breeding programs continues to generate genetically superior lines of value to the industry.
Peach
Dario Chavez released P-22, a red leaf peach seedling rootstock that combines the best qualities of PTSL (peach tree short life) resistance, resistance to Meloidogyne floridensis, and low suckering. It is differentiated as a moderate chill selection with pink flowers, red leaves and otherwise normal red coloration throughout its tissues.
Peanut
A new release from Bill Branch meets the demand for high yield and value in a region where tomato spotted wilt and leaf spot diseases are a persistent challenge. GA 163120 is new high-oleic, multiple pest resistant runner-type peanut cultivar with medium late maturity. It also has a high level of resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), root-knot nematode (RKN) and leafhoppers.
Peanut
Additional releases come from Soraya Bertioli and her colleagues, who introgressed resistance traits from several species into allotetraploids that can more readily be used as parents in a cultivar development program. The induced allotetraploids GA-IpaDur1, GA-BatDur1, GA-BatDur2, GA-MagDur1, GA-IpaCor1, GA-IpaVillo1 combine wild accessions with the following resistances to peanut pests and diseases:
- batizocoi K9484 PI 298639 - rust (Puccinia arachidis), Meloidogyne arenaria (RKN), thrips (Enneothrips flavens), Early Leaf Spot (ELS), Late Leaf Spot (LLS), and scab (Passalora arachidicola, Northopassalora personata and Sphaceloma arachidis)
- duranensis V14167 PI 692197 - rust, ELS, LLS and scab
- duranensis KSSc 38906 PI 497270 - rust ELS and LLS
- magna GKSSc 30097 PI 468340- rust ELS, LLS and scab
- ipaënsis GKBSPSc 30076 PI 468322 - partial resistance to fall armyworm, thrips, rust, ELS and LLS
- correntina GKP9548 PI 262881 - rust, ELS and LLS
- villosa V12812 PI 330651 - rust, ELS and LLS
Wheat Breeding
The wheat breeding program of Mohamed Mergoum released two new cultivars that showed good performance in state and/or regional variety trials.
- GA111055-1-19LE12 - a high grain yielding wheat line with a medium-late maturity and very good test weight, and good resistance to races of leaf rust and stripe/yellow rust, as well as to Hessian fly.
- GA151313-DH224-19E38 – a high grain yielding, medium-early maturing line with test weight equal or superior to all the checks. It has has medium resistance to Fusarium head blight, excellent resistance to races of leaf rust and good resistance to stripe/yellow rust. It shows very good resistance to Hessian fly.
