In her own words ...
Where are you from, and why did you choose to study at UGA/CAES?
I was grew up in Arabi, Georgia U.S. on a farm and loved working in agriculture. When I graduated high school I wanted to work in agriulture, so I got a couple of agriculture degrees from ABAC I got a job at the Tifton Research station and enjoyed working in the research division of ag. (I liked feeling like I was helping improve farmers work/knowledge). So I enrolled in graduate school to futher my education to help.
What is your major/degree program, and what department?
Major: Plant Breeding Genomic and Genetics Department: Crop and Soil Sciences.
Why did you choose your major?
During my working career I have worked under three different Plant Breeders, I enjoyed the work and wanted better understanding of what I was doing.
What is your favorite class you have taken?
Plant Breeding Practicum- I was interesting to meet all the plant breeders learn about there crops and the issues they were are improving.
Who has been your favorite instructor?
I love learning, so it is very hard to pick a favorite instructor, each has shared an abundace of knowlege and an new way to look at problems.
What has been the best experience you've had so far at the college?
I have enjoyed the plant breeding, physically making a cross between plants, harvesting the seed and then studying those plants.
What do you want to do with what you have learned here?
I would like to continue in research and apply what I have learned.
How has your experience at UGA changed you?
It has helped me to think more outside of the box and to definately not believe what I am told, but to research it myself.
Thinking of the word agriculture - what does agriculture mean to you? In what ways does agriculture impact your life and your culture?
Growing up in rural Georgia, agriculture is a way of life when almost everyone you know either works on a farm or in the industry. Agriculture is more than the growing of food and fiber. Unlike how farming is displayed on tv and or talked about in the new, people who work in agriculture, I find care almost more about the land and enviroment in which they make their living, they worry about helping their neighbors, and are not out to make a quick buck.
What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?
I enjoy vegetable gardening there is something very satisfying when you get to eat something you grew.
