In her own words ...
Where are you from, and why did you choose to study at UGA/CAES?
I am from Hillsboro, TX, and I chose UGA because it is one of the top schools in the country for plant breeding.
What is your major/degree program, and what department?
I am getting my M.S. degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics, and I am in the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics (IPBGG).
Why did you choose your major?
I chose this program because we will need to feed 10 billion people by 2050. We can't do this without plant breeding, since we need to produce crops that produce more, resist diseases, and tolerate harsh weather conditions. IPBGG is the best program to gain knowledge about plant genetics and the new technologies we have at our disposal to make genetic gain.
What is your favorite class you have taken?
My favorite class has either been PBGG 8010- Research Methods and Design for Crop Science, or PBGG 8140- Advanced Plant Breeding.
Who has been your favorite instructor?
Dr. Wallace has been my favorite instructor, since he is always willing to answer questions and treats students with kindness. He is also able to explain complex genetic and statistical concepts in a clear and concise way.
What has been the best experience you've had so far at CAES?
My best experiences in CAES have been attending the various events put on by the college. There have been many opportunities to network and meet people with similar interests and passions.
What do you want to do with what you have learned here?
I want to become a plant breeder and make improvements to crops so we can feed the world in a sustainable way. My current interest is either in working for industry or the USDA.
How has your experience at UGA changed you?
Since leaving Texas and being so far away from my family and friends, I have become more independent. Graduate school has helped me develop my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I have found incredibly hard-working, intelligent, and kind friends and colleagues that have helped me become a great team member.
Thinking of the word agriculture - what does agriculture mean to you? In what ways does agriculture impact your life and your culture?
Agriculture is the foundation for our world today. It impacts my life every day, since it is responsible for the food, feed, fiber, and fuel we have today.
What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?
Outside of class, I love to read, travel, hike, and spend time with family and friends. One of my favorite things about Georgia is the beautiful scenery. I was able to go whitewater rafting in Tennessee for the first time when I came to UGA!
