In his own words ...

Where are you from, and why did you choose to study at UGA/CAES?
I am from Indonesia, and I chose to study at UGA because the program's structure is unique compared to the other universities in the US and aligned with my future career goals as a plant breeder.

What is your major/degree program, and what department?
I am pursuing a PhD at the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics, Department of Crop and Soil Science, UGA, under the direction of Dr Zenglu Li.

Why did you choose your major?
I grew up growing ornamental plants in Indonesia and was fascinated with the works of plant breeders in creating unique ornamental plant cultivars. Curiosity about the methodology and science behind plant breeding has led me to choose this major.

What is your favorite class you have taken?
Transgenic breeding and quantitative aspects of plant breeding.

Who has been your favorite instructor?
Dr. Wayne Parrott

What has been the best experience you've had so far at the college?
My best experience is getting involved in the soybean breeding program activities at the UGA. This involvement gave me a better perspective on the operation of the breeding program and an understanding of important factors that contribute to its success. I also enjoy attending scientific meetings, interacting with people with the same interest, and making friends.

What do you want to do with what you have learned here?
I will return to my home country to serve in the university and establish a breeding program.

How has your experience at UGA changed you?
My experience at UGA as a scientist in training has improved my professional and personal aspects. I learned a lot about critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. In addition, studying abroad also taught me about diversity and cultural understanding.

Thinking of the word agriculture - what does agriculture mean to you? In what ways does agriculture impact your life and your culture?
To me, agriculture means something that we cannot live without it. Agriculture gives us food, feed, fuel, fibre, and most things we need to live a good life.

What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?
I like street photography and watching movies in my free time. I also enjoy watching football games with friends.
