Where are you from, and why did you choose to study at UGA/CAES?
I'm from Brazil. I chose to study at UGA because it's a renowed institution in agriculture. Students come from all around the world to study at UGA, it is interesting getting to listen and explore different approaches to methods and concepts in agriculture.
What is your major/degree program, and what department?
I am a PhD student in Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics.
Why did you choose your major?
I've been always fascinated on how genomes work. Being able to understand and use molecular breeding techniques to improve major characteristics of important crop species to humanity.
What is your favorite class you have taken?
GWAS/Genomic Selection.
Who has been your favorite instructor?
Dr. Jason Wallace.
What has been the best experience you've had so far at CAES?
The best experience has been living in a new country and interacting with different colleagues from all around the world.
What do you want to do with what you have learned here?
I want to pursue a career as a professor, to keep doing research and teaching future scientists about plant breeding and genomics.
How has your experience at UGA changed you?
My experience at UGA changed my approach to science and made me more experienced in field work. During my master's I only worked at a molecular biology lab. This makes me a more competent Plant Breeder.
Thinking of the word agriculture - what does agriculture mean to you? In what ways does agriculture impact your life and your culture?
Agriculture is the base of humankind as we know today. It's our jobs as plant breeder to develop and improve agriculture methods, which are the key for sustainability for future generations.
What do you like to do outside of class — hobbies, interests, secret talents?
I like playing video-games, especially the ones that involve strategy. I also love cooking, especially for friends and family!
